By the way, I'm sure you've seen it elsewhere already, but it broke on Existential Ennui first: Matt Helm is returning to print!Nick Jones (Louis XIV, the Sun King)https://www.blogger.com/profile/17716508525331235684noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5448581132479481740.post-89772123800143432682011-12-14T08:00:58.485-05:002011-12-14T08:00:58.485-05:00Nick, I discovered Hamilton's work when I was ...Nick, I discovered Hamilton's work when I was a teenager. Every few years I reread the Helm stories, and get a new appreciation for their strengths each time. As for the Dean Martin films, they were parodies or spoofs of spy stories. Imagine replacing the hardboiled flavor of "The Maltese Falcon" with something like "Monty Python."

I've never seen the TV series with Anthony Franciosa, in which Helm was drawn as a private eye, but Franciosa would have been better casting, back then, than Martin! (Though I've always thought, thanks to the Gold Medal artwork, that Helm looked something like '40s-'50s actor Randolph Scott. . . .)Benzadmiralhttp://benzadmiral-uncle.blogspot.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5448581132479481740.post-16331808318753505522011-11-27T06:39:22.205-05:002011-11-27T06:39:22.205-05:00No, they certainly didn't. Looking forward to reading it.

Those awful Dean Martin movies didn't do Hamilton much of a service, did they?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
