Casino Royale came out in 1953 in the UK and 1954 in the US; 1958 was the date of the comic strip adaptation of the first Bond novel. I got introduced to the character when The Silencers movie first appeared on ABC in the early '70s. The Helm novels have always been my favorite series, and I think Hamilton was under-appreciated during his lifetime.
