And at this point, the Raylan stories are a series, just as much as Justified is. Plus, to my mind, Pronto and Riding the Rap are better novels. And Fire in the Hole is just one of a bunch of great short stories in that book.Nick Jones (Louis XIV, the Sun King)https://www.blogger.com/profile/17716508525331235684noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5448581132479481740.post-23978475400106389382012-03-14T16:14:50.721-04:002012-03-14T16:14:50.721-04:00I heard the review on The Book Report (http://www....I heard the review on The Book Report (http://www.bookreportradio.com)and got the book, but now after reading your comment, should I read the previous books first, or can I jump right in with Raylan?Jackhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16244442031934899307noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5448581132479481740.post-63758099824666057242012-02-29T04:49:04.751-05:002012-02-29T04:49:04.751-05:00Thanks for the comment, ehsani. I think you're...Thanks for the comment, ehsani. I think you're right in that readers won't get a complete sense of who Raylan is in RAYLAN, but then the same is true of RIDING THE RAP and FIRE IN THE HOLE: you'd need to read PRONTO to see the whole picture. But to my mind Leonard's characterization is so deft in RAYLAN – and in all of his novels – that any reader coming to the book cold will immediately grasp the essence of Raylan, and indeed of the other characters in the book. And if they find that there's not quite enough there for them – well, they can seek out the other novels!

Oh, and nice website!Nick Jones (Louis XIV, the Sun King)https://www.blogger.com/profile/17716508525331235684noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5448581132479481740.post-64469096605223246352012-02-28T14:13:12.745-05:002012-02-28T14:13:12.745-05:00I also recently reviewed this book; Leonard’s fan ...I also recently reviewed this book; Leonard’s fan will obviously love this new book but I am not sure Readers who are not familiar with Leonard writing and specifically Raylan. They might have a bit of difficulty as the character development might not answer all their questions.

You can find my review here: http://www.mysterytribune.com/2012/02/26/raylan-elmore-leonard/ehsanihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14701646313849614460noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5448581132479481740.post-66227228728195201422012-02-16T15:55:30.894-05:002012-02-16T15:55:30.894-05:00Ta for the update, Carrie. I can definitely recommend Raylan though; it's prime Elmore Leonard.Nick Jones (Louis XIV, the Sun King)https://www.blogger.com/profile/17716508525331235684noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5448581132479481740.post-90766730743724500522012-02-15T17:15:42.870-05:002012-02-15T17:15:42.870-05:00BLAST! I mean, in one sense, I guess the book is "based" on Justified, since Justified inspired Leonard to write it. But Justified wouldn't exist without Leonard, so it's a bit back-handed.

Authors often despair of the blurb that ends up on their books, so by this point in his career I doubt anything surprises Elmore Leonard now. But I've just noticed the type treatment is different to the American edition as well -- the US version is more in keeping with the Justified titles. That's a curious choice on the part of the UK publisher, especially as they've played up the link to Justified...Nick Jones (Louis XIV, the Sun King)https://www.blogger.com/profile/17716508525331235684noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5448581132479481740.post-67191428662629331092012-02-13T19:17:43.346-05:002012-02-13T19:17:43.346-05:00Is that the UK cover?
