And the ending to the book was shattering. A brilliant novel.
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17729450305390067214noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5448581132479481740.post-37569069519581578392013-03-11T07:34:55.866-04:002013-03-11T07:34:55.866-04:00And thank you for the lovely comment, Judith! And thank you for the lovely comment, Judith!Nick Jones (Louis XIV, the Sun King)https://www.blogger.com/profile/17716508525331235684noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5448581132479481740.post-58167306982289115692013-03-08T19:47:05.685-05:002013-03-08T19:47:05.685-05:00Very late discovering this site. Just to mention that, on husband's posting to our embassy in Vienna, I discovered the books by
Sarah Gainham, who was living there at the time. I was very much influenced by the series featuring Julia, principle actress of the Burgtheatre. Descriptions of post-war Vienna were, to the daughter of English and Canadian WWII veterans, a step in moving beyond the previous generation's Germanic prejudice (understandable in them). Thanks to the late Ms. Gainham (and of course, some Viennese friends.)

Judith

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5448581132479481740.post-3135145083288227252011-11-09T06:24:31.529-05:002011-11-09T06:24:31.529-05:00Thanks Olman. Some of Gainham's early novels are quite scarce – I've yet to find a worthwhile copy of Time Right Deadly, for instance – but you might be able to track down fairly cheap copies if you're luckyNick Jones (Louis XIV, the Sun King)https://www.blogger.com/profile/17716508525331235684noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5448581132479481740.post-71817064270366169162011-11-08T16:35:11.353-05:002011-11-08T16:35:11.353-05:00Very interesting. I'm always happy to have a new female writer to add to my list.OlmanFeelyushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17521657876810568251noreply@blogger.com
